Nick Jonas and the Jonas Brothers had a big weekend at the MTV VMAs. The event had Jonas Brothers’ footprints all over it. They performed at the event, they won an award for Best Pop Song and were able to celebrate the evening with their significant others. That is, all of them except for Nick. Nick’s wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, was not able to attend the VMAs due to prior engagements. As a result, Nick was left as the fifth wheel among brothers Joe and Kevin and their counterparts, Sophie Turner and Daniel Jonas. When the Jonas Brothers were announced for winning Best Pop Song (‘Sucker’), Kevin and Joe turned to kiss their ladies while Nick just stood there awkwardly laughing. Even though Priyanka couldn’t be there, she wasn’t going leave her man hanging. She posted a picture to her Instagram account (which has over 40 million followers) that captured the moment the Jonas Brothers win was announced. But this time, she was in the photo, via Photoshop, shown in a red dress, gently resting in the arms of Nick while he held her with his hand on her booty. It was a perfect, humorous ending to an amazing weekend for the New Jersey native.
The MTV Video Music Awards has welcomed thousands of celebrities since it started in 1992. They all walk the red carpet to make their entrance.  The power couples glow in their borrowed designer gowns and tuxes, but after looking back, there were many where the glow faded just after that VMA appearance. Is it a curse, or is limited longevity just the nature of a power couple? Here are a few couples who slit after VMA appearances:

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in 2000

J. Lo and Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2000

Eva Longoria and Nelly in 2005

Kanye West and Alexis Phifer in 2007

Kristen Stweart (Twilight) and Michael Angarano in 2008

Kanye West and Amber Rose in 2009

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa in 2014

Nick Jonas and Olivia Culpo in 2014

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (multiple broke ups in 2017)

Ariana Grande & Pete Davidson in 2018

The MTV video awards are coming soon and it seems that Ariana Grande might not be attending. Grande and Taylor Swift received the most nominations for this year’s MTV video awards, they both received 10.  Swift will not attend the show itself but will be performing at the event. In contrast, Grande’s tour schedule will make it hard for her to attend; she happens to have two shows lined up in Europe the days before and after the VMAs event in Newark, New Jersey. The video of the year award will be an interesting battle to watch; Ariana Grande’s video “thank u, next” will compete against Taylor Swift’s video “You Need to Calm Down” for this coveted prize. Furthermore, this competition will be made more interesting by the fact that newly discovered fame will be competing against well-established talent; Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X, two recent breakthrough stars, were also nominated for the video of the year award. The award itself might be determined by what MTV prefers; will it be well established talent or brand-new musical stars?
MTV and Diddy are bringing back the hit show “Making the Band” next year. The premise of the show is to form a band from scratch via auditions, build group chemistry and then follow the progress of that group as their careers take off.  In its prior seasons the show provided a platform for groups such as O-Town, Day26, and Danity Kane. The new season will become more global, a reflection of the more international music business that exists today.  Diddy and his team are currently scouring the globe for the best undiscovered talent for next season’s show. It remains to be seen if the focus will be on developing Pop / R&B / Hip Hop groups as in season’s past or if the broader search will result in broader genres. Changes to Making the Band represent just one of the many adjustments to current shows and new shows being added to the MTV lineup in the coming year.
