Spoiler Alert … It is VERY underwhelming!

Lil Nas X burst onto the music scene through the hit song Old Town Road (and Old Town Road Remix) which has sat atop the Billboard Top 100 charts for 12 straight weeks now. An amazing feat for the up and coming 20 year old music & meme artist.

Fan’s of Lil Nas X and the music world have been anxiously awaiting what was to come next as he continued to define his image and brand in the music industry. What was next was the release of his EP “7” which dropped on Wednesday June 27th. The EP has 8 songs including both Old Town Road, and Old Town Road Remix, thus 6 new tracks. It’s run time is a mere 18 minutes and change, about long enough to listen to while taking a shower and getting ready for school or work.

The EP features the likes of Billy Ray Cyrus (obviously) as well as a song with Cardi B, called Rodeo. Rodeo maybe is the closest song to Old Town Road in terms of the mixture of a country and rap feel, outside of Cardi B’s verses of course. The other songs are kind of all over the place, ending abruptly at times, while never really establishing a theme or flow throughout the EP. “Panini” the second song on the EP, is rather a catchy trap beat with relatable lyrics, and likely will be the new song that grabs the most traction off this EP.

Writer’s Opinion

For me personally, the EP was a total disaster. I was (am) a big fan of the Old Town Road songs, and continue to listen to them in daily rotation. However, as far as the rest of the EP goes, I’ll take Panini for my playlist and toss the rest in the do not touch folder. Lil Nas X is only 20, and I have no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him, but he’s made some rookie mistakes and has failed to create an identity for himself with this EP.

X sounded like a combination of Kid Cudi & Khalid, but as if the Monstars from Space Jam stole their talent and forced the artist into the studio to perform. The EP gets a C- from me, and that is only because of Old Town Road. Remove Old Town Road from the equation and you’ve got yourself a major clunker. Hopefully Lil Nas X can rebound from this disappointment of an EP or he’ll find his name added to a famous list of “One and Done” artists that reads LOL Nas X.
