“Don’t you know you’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day!” A phrase we have all heard when talking about wardrobe decisions for after the first Tuesday of September. But why? White is a great color in fashion, why can’t it be worn after Labor Day? Fortunately, the old tradition seems to be on it’s way out. There seem to be two theories on the origin of the tradition.  According to Time Magazine, the first theory is temperature based. White is a cooler color during the hot summer months because of physics – the sun reflects off of light colors while it absorbs into dark colors. Especially in the days before air conditioning, anything would help. The second theory is based on class and social status. A blue collar worker, grinding away in industrial cities would naturally wear darker colors since white would tend to soil.  Higher class people, who were not laborers, would wear white as a means of showcasing their elite social status. Whether either of these theories is true, it doesn’t matter since marketers in recent years have re-branded the color as “winter white.”  So, after this Tuesday, September 3rd, rock the white with pride whenever you feel like it.  The answer to anyone who challenges your choice is “winter white.”

Remember how awesome it was to play Snake on your phone?  Cell phone games have come a long, long way since those early days and so have those early games. You had the likes of Tetris, Solitaire, Black Jack, Texas Hold‘em and other card games that evolved into Words with Friends, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja type games. Now games are at a whole new level, they’re practically console quality in your hand.

Here are five of our favorite interactive, smartphone gaming apps:

1. Fortnite

The uber popular, free console game is also available on your phone and you can “drop in” with players across all platforms – PS4, Xbox, PC, etc. The game is constantly providing new content, weapons, maps and worlds, which makes it easy to come back to on iOS and Android devices. Did we mention the best part, its free!

2. Pokemon Go

After dropping back in 2016, Pokemon Go quickly became the hottest game on the market and it remains one of the most popular, fun smartphone games to this day. Available on iOS and Android, Pokemon Go, like Fortnite, is a free to download and play. There are in-app purchases available, which is the way they make money. Wherever you go, there are Pokemon to be caught and gyms to be won and defended.  So catch them all, if you can, and hold down the gyms like you’re defending your own home!

3. Peter Panic

is a musical adventure game where you get to combine the fun nature of mini-games (think Super Mario World) with the musical aspect of Broadway. Your character is Peter, and by completing games successfully, you help him save the town theater where he loves to perform. The game is available on Android and iOS, however, if you want to save your progress, it will cost you a onetime fee of $2.99. Great for children of all ages!

4/5. Telling Lies & Her Story

We combined the two in a tie for fourth and fifth because they are practically the same game, just different versions. Created by Sam Barlow, who did Fortnite and Pokemon Go, these games are solve-the-mystery thrillers that feature real interactive clips from real actors to help you get to the bottom of the cases. Her Story is a murder mystery while Telling Lies is a multi-character story in which all characters are connected in unknown ways. Both games only available on iOS devices and cost $6.99 and $3.99 respectively. Check out video clips of each game.

In case you missed it, World Cup Champion and US Women’s National Team Legend Carli Lloyd was at the Philadelphia Eagles camp this week and she drilled a 55-yard field goal, no problem. The South Jersey native, who has Philly sports ties, was welcomed by Eagles. Back to the field goal, Lloyd probably would have been good from 60-yards on that attempt, but, mind you, it was done without game pressure and without pads – a totally different ball game. With the buzz swirling around the video, many have suggested Lloyd could kick in the NFL, and after thinking about it a bit, so does she. “I was laughing about it with my husband at first. But now I’m sort of entertaining the idea.” She said. “I think that I definitely could do it with the right practice and the right technique and get my steps down and figure all that out. I don’t want to go in there blindly. I want to actually attempt to do it. But I know that I definitely could do it because anything I set my mind to do, I can do it. And I actually do kick balls for a living. So, yeah, it’s all about the technique, and we’ll see what happens.” Now, as cool as it was to see Lloyd blast one in from 50+, the idea of her playing in the NFL may be unrealistic. Though she is a legend on the soccer field, maybe the most accomplished woman in our country’s soccer history, to suggest her 135-pound frame could stand up to a broken NFL kicking play is a stretch. Keenan Allen tweeted, “Sound sweet, ’til somebody block the kick and all of a sudden she on defense. Would be like the stampede scene in the Lion King movie. She do got a boot tho!” Let’s be honest, people are retiring from the NFL because of how physically dangerous the sport can be. While Lloyd has one heck of a leg and can probably drill NFL field goals, the rough side of the game that kickers do encounter from time-to-time would be physically challenging. These are 250+ pound elite, male athletes with incredible strength and speed. It is not a question of toughness.  And it’s not men verses women, it is just simple biology. In the brutal game of football, very big, strong and fast v. much, much, much smaller = potential danger for the smaller. Lloyd would be better served finishing her soccer career strong and keeping her body healthy for retirement.

Ariana Grande’s big summer rolls on. Fresh off a couple awards at the VMA’s, the pop star released a new line of perfume, named after her hit song “Thank U Next”. Right now the perfume is available exclusively on Ulta.com before its September release in Ulta Beauty stores. It will also be available in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Ms. Grande is no stranger to the fragrance game, she won an award for her fragrance Cloud and now brings her hit phrase ‘Thank U Next’ into the beauty game. It has been regarded as the phrase of the year as it captured the current mood; “moving on and taking control in a self-affirming way.”

Building a product around a phrase she made so famous is a smart business move that helps its legacy to grow.  Grande explains, “I wanted to make a fragrance that smells related to my first fragrance Ari, but more summery.  So, I revisited Ari’s fruity pear and raspberry notes and changed it up by adding some coconut. I was inspired to design a bottle that represented the message of my song – the emergence of the perfume from the broken heart represents moving forward from a challenging chapter.” After she dropped Thank U Next, it hit over 55 million views on You Tube within 24 hours which was a record in itself.  Ariana Grande’s fans run deep, so expect her perfume to take off much like her song did.

We have been learning more and more about Disney+ weekly as the company continues to release new information ahead of its November 12th release date. We reported a ton of announcements regarding content last week and now we have some information on their streaming limits.

One Disney+ account will be given permission to stream on up to 10 devices – sounds like a generous offer next to Netflix, which allows permission for only 1, 2, or 4 devices.  Example: If you have a Disney+ account on your TV, your iPhone, and iPad, you’re at three right off the bat. Let’s assume a family of four has Disney+ on each of their phones and on a TV in each of their bedrooms, that’s 7. Throw the family room into the mix and it’s up to 8.

Disney’s Special Labor Day Weekend Offer:

Disney Club members can sign up for a 3-year package of Disney+ over Labor Day Weekend for a cost of $141, a package that will cost regular folks $70 a year or $210 for 3-years.

A new study from the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) shows that across the top 100 grossing movies from 2007-2018 only three percent of the films featured leads or co-leads with Latino or Latina actors. The study also found that there was a major shortage in Latino / Latina directors and producers. Given that the Latino community represents over 18 percent of the US population and 40 percent of the California population, why are they so under-represented in mainstream Hollywood films? In addition to the under-representation, Latinos are often depicted in roles of violence and hate.  It’s something that must change to bring to light the true beauty of the Latino culture and to bring a more balanced understanding of the Latin contribution to the broader American culture.
Arian Grande stepped back on the stage in Manchester, England for the first time since her 2017 appearance that ended with a bombing in which 22 people died.  Her emotions were evident when she started the concert by saying, “I’m so happy to be with you, so thank you for having me. Sorry, I’m so nervous. I had so much more to say, but I’m really very overwhelmed. So thank you.” Grande went on to perform nine songs during the hour long show. She opened with “No Tears Left to Cry” and closed with “One Last Time.” It has been a sensitive subject for Grande who has said regarding Manchester “I think of it constantly and will carry this with me every day for the rest of my life.” As she continues her Sweetener tour, Ms. Grande must feel relieved to have gotten back up on stage in Manchester, in the name of those who passed, the tragic events that transpired and to conquer her own internal fears born of that night two years ago.

Disney and Pixar announced that Jamie Foxx will be the lead actor in its film Soul, scheduled for release in June 2020.  It’s the first time an African American has played a lead role in a Pixar animation.

The film synopsis asks, “Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you?  Soul takes you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions.”

Joe Gardner (played by Foxx) is a middle school band director and a jazz lover. After several attempts Gardner finally gets accepted to play at a highly regarded New York City jazz club, only to die shortly after. That’s just the beginning.  The rest takes place when his soul goes on to the lands beyond and he meets up with other souls up above.

Several clips have been released through the Walt Disney Studio Twitter account.

The MTV Video Music Awards has welcomed thousands of celebrities since it started in 1992. They all walk the red carpet to make their entrance.  The power couples glow in their borrowed designer gowns and tuxes, but after looking back, there were many where the glow faded just after that VMA appearance. Is it a curse, or is limited longevity just the nature of a power couple? Here are a few couples who slit after VMA appearances:

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in 2000

J. Lo and Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2000

Eva Longoria and Nelly in 2005

Kanye West and Alexis Phifer in 2007

Kristen Stweart (Twilight) and Michael Angarano in 2008

Kanye West and Amber Rose in 2009

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa in 2014

Nick Jonas and Olivia Culpo in 2014

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (multiple broke ups in 2017)

Ariana Grande & Pete Davidson in 2018
